Anthem law offers a chance to educate

The expected introduction of a national anthem law apparently has some educators worried. Their fear is whether teachers are obligated to report their pupils if they show disrespect in public during the playing of March of the Volunteers.

Besides a fine, the offence is criminal, liable to a maximum of three years in prison. So aren’t citizens obligated to report crimes?

“It will be a challenge for educators,” said Teddy Tang Chun-keung, chairman of the Hong Kong Association of the Heads of Secondary Schools. “Schools are education institutions. We tend to give young people chances when they make mistakes so that they learn.”

Well, I am not a teacher but I think it’s pretty clear: you should not report your pupils to the authorities. Not unless their behaviour affects the........
