On the Kerala government response to the Sabarimala judgment

The violence on the road to Sabarimala has distressed many Lord Ayyappa devotees. A place of pilgrimage has been defiled and those responsible are unlikely to be forgiven by the people. Whether the LDF government in Kerala likes it or not, a large number of people, and not just Hindus, feel the government is at fault. Of course, those supporting the judgment and diehard Leftists will not agree. The Sangh Parivar protesters mouthing obscenities at journalists and women pilgrims, hurling stones at police, and revealing an absolute lack of restraint despite standing on holy ground will not be blamed. It is the police that had to make sure that such a situation did not develop. And they failed.

This is the cross governments have to bear. The Kerala government was only implementing a Supreme Court judgment. It was the government’s responsibility to brainstorm on the challenges that crop up, identify threats to law and order, decide on a strategy and then execute it. While the government cannot be blamed for mala fide, it has betrayed a shocking lack of strategy. The initial decision........
