The time of year you start getting your garden ready for the summer is also peak time for dealing with every gardner's nightmare - patio weeds. Well, it turns out there may be a simple solution.

A handy 3-ingredient homemade 'weed killer' spray could be the solution you're after. With folks gearing up to add some sparkle to their gardens ahead of the summer months, one major task tends to be getting rid of any unruly weeds sprouting due to the winter rains.

Especially irritating are the ones that squeeze between your patio tiles. However, there's a simple way to banish those pesky weeds using a DIY weed killer concocted from three regular household items - probably collecting dust in your cupboards!, reports the Mirror.

The tip was shared on Mrs Hinch Gardening Tips page on Facebook when a frustrated woman posted: "I have numerous weeds coming through my block paving. I'm fed up of weeding them all to be just as bad the next week. Any ideas please? ".

Stalwarts of the group quickly replied with their helpful suggestions. Majority prescribed a blend of white vinegar, washing-up liquid and salt to exterminate weeds for good.

One enthusiastic member stated: "I use white vinegar, washing-up liquid and salt. It works fab; I swear by it."

Another echoed: "Salt, vinegar, water and washing-up liquid mixed and sprayed on the area."

Giving us a detailed run-down on how to thwart those pesky weeds, one gardening enthusiast suggested: "One of the reasons weeds grow through block paving is because the silicone sand needs replacing. I only use distilled white vinegar, table salt and washing-up liquid mixed water to eradicate these problem weeds naturally. But once they are gone, brush in silicone sand right up to the level of the block paving; this stops wind-born weed seeds from entering to soil level through the blocks. You can get silicone sand from a good builders merchant."

Not too long ago, we shed light on a gardening expert who swore by the same concoction for wiping out weeds. The founder of popular eco blog Moral Fibres, Wendy Graham, recommended filling an empty spray bottle with one litre of white vinegar, tipping in three large tablespoons of salt, and adding three teaspoons of washing-up liquid.

A swift spray of this mixture directly onto the weeds should annihilate them and prevent a recurrence. As for ingredients, table salt can be picked up for a meagre 40p online via Ocado, or you could pay a visit to supermarkets such as Morrisons where it costs 55p, or even Asda, priced at 65p. White vinegar hits the lowest price tag at Tesco, retailing at just 35p.

For your washing-up liquid, Asda offers it for 55p, while it's also on the shelves in Tesco at 65p. That means, for a scanty sum of as little as £1.30, you've got all you need for this garden hacker's dream.
