The University of Georgia just committed to paying Kirby Smart, its football coach, $130 million over the next decade. It’s a record-setting package, and it’s unlikely to be topped. In coming weeks, settlement talks over lawsuits between the NCAA and college athletes are likely to reach a multi-billion dollar agreement that will gouge athletic department budgets.

That’s good news for college athletes, past and present. But it’s bad news for coaches and administrators whose share of a typical athletic department’s budget is greater than what's paid out in scholarships and other aid. The NCAA and its member schools, under pressure to pay students, won't be able to justify those salaries anymore.
