The award of the 2023 Sveriges Riksbank (or Economics Nobel) prize to Claudia Goldin has further focused attention on women’s work, its level and what it means for agency and gender equality. This article examines the work participation choices made by urban educated middle-class women in Delhi (NCR), who had given up or taken breaks from their jobs primarily for care work. The breadwinner–homemaker model that they chose reflects the expectations of workplaces with respect to long hours at work.

Claudia Goldin was awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Econo­mic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2023 “for having advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes” (KVA 2023). Her pioneering work combined labour economics and economic history to provide the first comprehensive account of labour market outcomes for women in the United States (US) over 200 years and the causes behind the gender wage gap. Both the household, with its demand of time for tasks relating to the care of children, and the workplace, with its enormous demands, which Goldin characterises as “greedy work,” contribute to the observed outcomes.
