New Delhi: Borussia Dortmund shattered Paris Saint-Germain’s dream of lifting their maiden Champions League title with a 1-0 win in the second leg of the semi-final between the two sides at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Wednesday. Mats Hummels scored the only goal in the game to help Dortmund secure a memorable victory and set up a final against Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

Dortmund headed into the second leg with a 1-0 lead on aggregate having won the first leg at home but still started the second leg as the underdogs against the hosts. But PSG were wasteful up front and spilt several chances in front of the goal as they once again failed to deliver in a crunch encounter on the big stage.

PSG struck the woodwork as many as four times and were also a tad bit unlucky as Dortmund managed to see them off to secure a spot in the final for the first time since 2013. It turned out to be PSG’s sixth defeat in a Champions League semi-final as their curse continued. The Ligue 1 giants have had some of the best players in the world in their ranks over the years, but have failed to clinch success in Europe.

PSG have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League as many as seven times but have ended up on the losing side on six occasions. They have an 83% losing record in the Champions League semis which is the worst for any club in the history of the competition. The Ligue 1 giants have regularly disappointed in the Champions League despite having the likes of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Mbappe in their squad at one point.

PSG had many chances in the game but couldn’t find the back of the net against Dortmund in the second leg on Wednesday. One of the key reasons behind PSG’s failure to score could be manager Louis Enrique’s decision to not start Kylian Mbappe as the central striker and shift him to the left wing. Enrique played Portuguese striker Goncalo Ramos as his main striker with Mbappe supporting him from the left.

The move didn’t work out as Mbappe appeared lost on the left and couldn’t create much of an impact on the game. PSG managed a whopping 30 shots on the goal in the second leg against Dortmund without managing to score.

They set an unwanted record by becoming the team with the most shots on goal without scoring in a Champions League knockout match since the 2003/04 season. PSG hit the woodwork 4 times in their second-leg tie against Dortmund which is also the most by any team in a Champions League knockout tie.

Borussia Dortmund will now take on the winner of the second semi-final between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League at Wembley on June 02.
