Mumbai: Gangaur is a colourful and one of the most important festivals celebrated in Rajasthan and some parts of Gujarat, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana. The festival is predominantly a women’s festival and is dedicated to Goddess Gauri, who represents purity and austerity, and Lord Shiva, who is considered to be her consort. Every year, Gangaur is celebrated on the third day of Chaitra Navratri. This year, this auspicious day is on April 11.

During Gangaur, married and unmarried women worship Goddess Gauri with great devotion and pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands or pray for a good husband, respectively.

Women dress up in vibrant Rajasthani attire, adorn their hands with intricate henna designs, and participate in various traditional rituals and ceremonies. They carry earthen pots with a lamp inside, known as ‘ghudilas,’ on their heads, and sing songs praising Goddess Gauri.

The festival is also a celebration of spring, harvest, and marital fidelity. Gangaur is a beautiful and culturally rich festival that celebrates love, devotion, and the vibrant traditions of Rajasthan.
