Gulzar, categorized as an “A” category militant and listed among the “most wanted” by security forces, was the last surviving member of the Lashkar-e-Taiba’s shadow network, The Resistance Front (TRF), Gulzar joined the militant ranks in 2021. The police claim that his killing marks a significant blow to the terror outfit, which has been responsible for a series of attacks in the Kashmir Valley including JK police personnel Safi Ullah Qadri in 2022..

The initial encounter, which began on Monday, resulted in the neutralization of Basit Dar, a top TRF commander who carried a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head. Acting on intelligence inputs, security forces cordoned off the area and engaged in a fierce gunfight with the militants.

The encounter was triggered after security personnel received intelligence inputs regarding the presence of three terrorists and corned off the whole area. The hiding militants in the area opened fire on the security forces resulting in the gunfight.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had announced a cash bounty of Rs 10 lakh on Basit Ahmed Dar.
