The high-stakes operation was was launched on Monday evening when security forces cordoned the Redwani village in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, acting on intelligence reports hinting at the presence of militants in the area. A gunfight erupted as the joint team of the security agencies closed in on their target, with militants unleashing a volley of gunfire in a bid to escape from the spot.

Although the initial skirmish subsided, security forces maintained a tight cordon overnight to prevent any potential escape attempts by the militants from the scene. As dawn broke on Tuesday, the search operation resumed, leading to renewed contact of the security forces with the hidden insurgents. The ensuing exchange of fire raged on until the two militants were gunned down in the afternoon.

Against the backdrop of the unfolding terror incidents in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, the political landscape has started heated exchanges between Congress and BJP, each accusing the other of politicising security concerns.
