Accident occurred after lost control on the truck
According to police soources, a privately owned cargo vehicle carrying gold jewelery named Sejjilla Abhishik from Coimbatore to Salem on Salem-Coimbatore National Highway overturned across the road at Samatthupuram Medu area under Chithod Police Station next to Bhawani in Erode District yesterday night after the driver lost control due to strong wind.
Sasikumar, the driver of the vehicle carrying gold jewelery, and Balraj, the security guard, were seriously injured in the accident. Chithod police reached the spot after receiving the information and sent the 2 seriously injured persons to Bhawani Government Hospital for treatment. According to the preliminary investigation by the police, 810 kg of gold jewelery worth Rs 666 crore was taken from Coimbatore to Salem.
Commercial Tax Department officials conducted investigations
Later, the police removed the van with gold jewelery worth 666 crores and took it safely to the police station. Subsequently, after the inspection by the Commercial Tax Department officials, they sent the gold jewelery to Salem in a replacement vehicle with armed police protection. The accident caused a stir in the area. Due to this, traffic was affected on the Coimbatore-Salem highway for more than 1 hour.
