New Delhi: Sanju Samson has done more than enoguh to be India’s preferred keeper-batter at the T20 World Cup, believes Rajasthan Royals’ director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara

Samson is in India’s 15-member squad but faces a stiff battle with Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant, who has made an impressive return to action in IPL 2024 after ver a year on the sidelines following a horrific car crash.

He blasted 86 runs off 46 balls on Tuesday but Rajasthan lost to Delhi by 20 runs at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. The Rajasthan skipper has made 471 runs in 11 IPL 2024 matches

The right hander struck his fifth half-century of the tournament on Tuesday but was dismissed in controversial circumstances as he was adjudged to have been caught cleanly in the long-on fence.

When Sangakkara to comment on who should be Indias first-choice keeper batter, he didn’t hesistate to make a choice.

“It’s really up to Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma and how they see the combination,” the former Sri Lanka captain said.

“But he has made his case, so hopefully he’ll have a good run in the World Cup.”

With eight wins in 11 matches, Rajasthan are all but through to the play-offs with Samson sitting third in the to run-getters’ listt behind Virat Kohli (542) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (541).

Pant has also had a successful campaign so far with 413 runs in 12 matches, being among the top 10 run scorers after recovering from a car accident in December 2022.

“With Sanju, the biggest thing about this season for him is having a lot of clarity about the way he should bat. There are certain stages of the game that he seems to lose a bit of concentration, which we’ve addressed from past seasons,” Sangakkara said.

The former keeper-batter said Samson, who is in a World Cup squad for the firt time, is a team man and has changed his mindset about the importance of rest and recovery.

Instead of only training and being tired mentally and physically, he has didvided his time and Sangakkara said being a special player, nothing is beyond him when he is fresh and focussed.
