New Delhi: Sun protection is not merely a skincare routine; it’s a vital aspect of overall health and well-being. As the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause damage to the skin and hair, safeguarding against them is paramount. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and are associated with premature aging, such as wrinkles and age spots, while UVB rays primarily affect the outer layers of the skin, leading to sunburns and contributing to skin cancer risk. Additionally, both types of UV radiation can damage the hair shaft, leading to dryness, brittleness, and color fading. Hence, incorporating essential sun protection measures into daily skincare and haircare routines is crucial for maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin and hair.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Simal Soin, Founder and Chief Dermatologist, AAYNA Clinics and Chief Medical Officer, Clinikally, shared some pro tips on sun protection in summer. The expert started by recommending a sunscreen.

“One of the foundational steps in sun protection is the application of sunscreen. When selecting a sunscreen, it’s essential to choose one that offers broad-spectrum protection, meaning it guards against both UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, opt for a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30, which blocks about 97% of UVB rays. For extended outdoor activities, consider a higher SPF, but remember that no sunscreen can provide 100% protection. Applying sunscreen generously and reapplying it every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating, ensures continuous protection throughout the day. Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin areas, including the face, neck, ears, hands, and any other uncovered areas,” said the expert.

But sunscreen is not the only way to go about it; there are other steps involved too. Dr Soin said that in addition to sunscreen, wearing protective clothing can further shield the skin from harmful UV rays. Darker colors also tend to absorb more UV radiation than lighter colors. Wide-brimmed hats provide shade for the face, neck, and ears, reducing the risk of sun damage in these sensitive areas. Sunglasses with UV protection are essential to safeguard the eyes from UV radiation, which can contribute to cataracts and other eye conditions. By combining sunscreen with protective clothing and accessories, individuals can significantly reduce their exposure to harmful UV rays, promoting skin and hair health in the long term.

How to dodge the UV rays of the sun?

When outdoors, especially during these hours, staying in the shade whenever possible helps reduce the intensity of UV radiation reaching the skin and hair. Apart from direct sun exposure, indoor activities can also pose risks, as UV radiation can penetrate windows. Applying sunscreen daily, even when indoors, helps protect against incidental sun exposure. Window treatments such as tinting or UV-blocking films can further reduce UV penetration indoors, safeguarding the skin and hair from potential damage.

Pro tips to manage skin and hair health in summer

Dr Soin that incorporating sun protection into skincare and haircare routines should be a year-round commitment, regardless of the weather or season. This is because UV radiation can penetrate clouds, and snow, sand, and water can reflect and intensify UV rays, increasing the risk of sunburn and other sun-related damage. In the pursuit of sun protection, it’s essential to remember that certain skincare ingredients can complement these efforts.
