New Delhi: In a tragic incident, a model lost both her legs after using tampons – but the catch here was that she used the menstrual hygiene product safely. 24-year-old Lauren Wasser ensured that she used the product mindfully – from changing it every four hours to placing and removing it correctly. Yet, she soon started to experience flu-like symptoms. Within hours, she was only minutes away from death, said doctors.

Lauren was rushed to a hospital after she suffered from two heart attacks, both her kidneys failed and her tissues started to decompose. As a result, doctors had to amputate her right leg and some toes of the left foot. Eventually, the left leg also had to be removed. Doctors said that it was a case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) – a potentially-fatal infection. Experts say that it can occur when the tampon or menstrual cup being used is infected by a wound. Some of the symptoms that patients experience are:

TSS is a rare condition which is very serious as well – it may occur when a menstrual cup, tampon, contraceptive cap is used after c-section or vaginal birth. It may also cut when a menstrual hygiene product comes in contact with a wound, boil or an infected cut. Doctors say that this condition needs urgent treatment. This can be treated or controlled with surgery, oxygen, fluids, antibiotics or blood pressure medication. If any of the following symptoms are spotted, it is advised to check with a doctor ASAP:
