New Delhi: Appointing Rohit Sharma as India’s skipper for the T20 World Cup 2024 was a short-term decision by the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI). With Hardik Pandya’s persistent injury and dwindling form, BCCI considered Rohit the best bet to lead Team India for the marquee tournament.

But Rohit, 36, seems unlikely to be around for long, at least in the T20 format and with the emergence of next-gen stars, BCCI would look to choose a long-term leader of the Men in Blue.

Let alone being the captain of the side, Hardik, based on his current form – both as captain and all-rounder – in IPL 2024, doesn’t merit a place in the squad. Jasprit Bumrah could be an automatic choice for the leadership role due to his experience and game awareness. But will BCCI risk burdening India’s best bowler with the leadership responsibility?

The selectors will have to make some tough choices when they meet later this month to finalise India’s 15-man squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. The committee faces the problem of plenty, especially in the wicket-keeping department, which has several contenders.

According to India spin icon Harbhajan Singh, the Ajit Agarkar-led panel should select Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson as their first choice for the wicketkeeper-batter’s role.

The former off-spinner also advised the selectors to groom Samson as India’s next captain.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s knock is a proof of class is permanent . Form is temporary @ybj_19 and there shouldn’t be any debate about Keepar batsman . @IamSanjuSamson should walks in to the Indian team for T20 worldcup and also groomed as a next T20 captain for india after rohit . koi…

Samson has led from the front in IPL 2024 for Rajasthan Royals. The Jaipur-based side is currently leading the points table with seven wins. Under Samson’s captaincy, RR have lost just one match out of eight and are firm favourites to reach the playoffs. The Royals have excelled in all three departments by playing collective cricket.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch hailed Samson’s captaincy and credited him for maintaining a positive and calm atmosphere in the team.

I think he’s leading the side unbelievably well, you can see how calm the Rajasthan Royals are when they’re under pressure. And I think that the only game they lost was when they had that meltdown against GT right at the back end of the game, so they’ve been so clinical right throughout this IPL and a lot of credit has to go to Sanju for that,” said Finch on Star Sports.

Samson has been brilliant with the bat with 314 runs in eight matches at an average of 62.80 and a strike rate of 152.42.
