New Delhi: While there was uncertainty over the T20 World Cup selection of some big names, one rising star was tipped as a certain pick. Shivam Dube might have had ‘sleepless nights’ ahead of the squad selection but from inside must have known he had done enough to get a Visa to the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States.

Having fallen out of favour with the Indian team after his T20I debut in 2019, Dube clawed his way back into the national side with a stunning season with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023. He made a big impact with a Player of the Series performance against Afghanistan in January.

After taking the first step towards the national team, Dube continued his phenomenal ball-striking in IPL 2024. The tall-allrounder has hit 26 sixes in nine innings, scoring 350 runs at an average of 58.33 in the tournament this season (as of 1 May).

Dube left selectors with no other option than picking him in the T20 World Cup squad but even before the IPL heroics, he got a hint about his possible selection for the big-ticket event.

Dube has revealed how his conversation with skipper Rohit Sharma in early January gave him self-belief and motivation to play his natural game.

“When I got picked for the Afghanistan series, Rohit [Sharma] bhai told me I will [get a chance to] bowl and bat as well,” Dube said in a video shared on BCCI.tv.

“He asked ‘show us what you can do.’ If the captain tells you we want to see you do this, you feel motivated to express yourself. My only thought then was how I could perform and help the team win.”

Dube also credited MS Dhoni and CSK head coach Stephen Fleming for his development as a free-flowing player.

Having often been compared with Yuvraj Singh in terms of playing style, Dube hopes to replicate the performances of the iconic Indian cricketer.
