New Delhi: Trent Boult continued his superb record with the new ball in the Indian Premier League. The Kiwi pacer rattled the Mumbai Indians top-order by dismissing two batters in the opening over of Match 14 of the IPL 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Minutes after the boos rang loud targeting MI skipper Hardik Pandya, an eerie silence engulfed the ground.

Boult came back to haunt his former franchise with a double blow in the opening over to give Rajasthan Royals a perfect start against the five-time champions. Rohit Sharma fell to his arch-nemesis after poking at a wide one while Naman Dhir was trapped in front on the very next ball.

Boult’s new ball heroics took him on level terms with Bhuvneshwar Kumar in a unique IPL record list.

The left-arm pacer has now picked up 25 wickets in the opening over which is the joint most in the history of IPL. Indian veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar has also bagged 25 wickets in the first over of an innings.

But Boult reigns supreme at the top as he took just 80 innings to reach the mark compared to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has taken 116 innings to take 25 wickets.

Boult also bagged a wicket in the opening over in Rajasthan’s first match of the campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) last week. The New Zealand bowler dismissed South African pacer Quinton de Kock to give RR an early breakthrough in Jaipur.

After removing both the openers in the first over, Boult came back to dismiss Dewald Brevis in the second over to destroy their former employers in front of a stunned home crowd. Boult’s partner Nadre Burger piled mofre misery on the home side by getting rid of Ishan Kishan (16 off 14) in the fourth over as MI lost their first four wickets in the powerplay.

Earlier, RR skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and elected to bowl first at Wankhede Stadium.
