New Delhi: Stage is set for an interesting battle for West Bengal’s Baharampur Lok Sabha seat between the incumbent Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of Congress, Yusuf Pathan, the cricketer who has been fielded by Trinamool Congress, and BJP’s Nirmal Kumar Saha. The constituency — an erstwhile Left citadel — has been the bastion of Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury since 1999, when he defeated the Revolutionary Socialist Party candidate. Chowdhury has been invincible ever since.

The voting for Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency will take place in the fourth phase on May 13. The vote counting and announcement of results for the seat will be held on June 4. Baharampur is one of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal. Total voters of Baharampur parliament seat as of 2019 Parliament Election was 1301033.

It is to be noted that Baharampur has had only 5 MPs from 2 parties till now, including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Interestingly, the Trinamool Congress, the ruling party of West Bengal, is yet to win this seat. It is to be seen if Yusuf Pathan, who has been dubbed as an “outsider”, can do it for the TMC.

Interesting political landscape

Baharampur Lok Sabha seat has 7 assembly constituencies — Burwan, Kandi, Beldanga, Naoda, Bharatpur, Baharampur, and Rejinagar. They all fall in Murshidabad district, with six seats ruled by the TMC and the BJP holding the Bharampur Assembly segment. Interestingly, the Congress doesn’t have a single assembly seat under the Baharampur Lok Sabha electoral segment. Notwithstanding, Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, has reigned supreme in the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency. He has been elected MP from here for five consecutive terms.

Electorate profile

The Baharampur seat has rural population, which comprises 82 per cent of the electorate. The population includes 13.11 per cent Scheduled Castes (SC) and 0.85 per cent Scheduled Tribes (ST). Around 45% of the population are Hindus, while 50% is Muslims.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s record

In 1996, Chowdhury bagged the Nabagram legislative assembly seat. The party fielded him from Baharampur Lok Sabha Constituency in 1999. RSP’s Tridib Chaudhuri was elected from Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency for record 7 terms and time will tell if Chowdhury can smash this record.
