Multiple law enforcement officers were hit by gunfire Monday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C., according to local police.

U.S. Marshals Task Force, which includes officers from different agencies, was conducting an investigation near the 5000 block of Galway Drive in the city when they were "engaged by active gunfire from a subject," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on social media platform X.

The police department said that the multiple law enforcement officers were stuck by the gunfire and that numerous victims were being transported to the hospital. The department's SWAT Team has responded to the scene, according to police.

Police are urging people to stay away from the area as it remains an active scene. The department also warned that there will be major roads shut down "to expedite victim transport."

At about 3:08 p.m., police said on X there was still "active gunfire" in the area.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) said he has been in touch with law enforcement about the shooting.

"I am in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area, and we have offered state resources to help," he wrote on X.
