Iran’s top diplomat vowed revenge on Monday for the suspected Israeli strike that killed Iranian officers in Damascus last week, making the comments during his first meeting with Syrian officials since the attack.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian flew into Damascus on Monday, following a trip to Oman the day prior. He held separate meetings with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad. The discussions focused on bilateral relations, including in the business realm, according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

Press TV, an Iranian state media outlet, reported that “Amir-Abdollahian has said Israel will be punished and will receive the necessary response to its criminal act in attacking the Iranian diplomatic site” during the meeting with Mekdad.
