Weather maps pinpoint all the places in the UK where snow will fall in next 48 hours. Flurries of snow are expected in some parts of the country today (Thursday, February 22) and tomorrow (Friday, February 23).

And a leading weather forecaster reckons they could turn 'heavy'. James Madden, from Exacta Weather, shared: "Throughout this morning and into this afternoon will see the first of those rain showers turning to snow across higher ground in parts of Northern Ireland and to the west of Scotland.

"As we head into this afternoon an area of precipitation has the potential to turn quite wintry and could bring some widespread snow showers across parts of Wales to begin with. However, as we progress throughout this afternoon, there is also the potential for some of this weather to turn wintry across parts of central and southern England and some temporary sleet or snow could be seen in these parts as we progress into this evening and even to some lower levels in these regions."

He went on: "Wintry showers of snow will then continue overnight and into tomorrow in quite a lot of western facing coastal areas from Wales, northern/northwest England and into the west of Scotland. Some of these could also be sporadically heavy in places to some lower levels and not just restricted to higher ground as other forecasts appear to be saying."

Mr Madden added: "In addition to this we will also see another band of precipitation becoming well organised and turning to an area of potentially moderate snow across parts of Wales, southwest England, Merseyside, northern England, Cumbria and in parts to the west of Scotland during tomorrow evening."

The expert signed off by saying: "It is therefore a little misleading when other forecasts are saying that any snow will be restricted to higher ground only for this period, as this will not be the case over the coming days and some snow will fall to lower levels within this period, particularly, in some parts of Wales, northern England and Scotland.

"These recent changes are also part of an important and longer term weather pattern switch that will keep us in largely near to below average temperatures as we flipflop between some periods of around average to very cold temperatures with some additional widespread snow events well into March."
