On Wednesday, the National Basketball Association indefinitely suspended Draymond Green for hitting an opposing player in the head. The involuntary time off will cost the Golden State Warriors all-star forward as much as $202,902 per game. That’s a lot of money, even for a player with a $100 million contract. But it’s certainly not the end of the losses that will be tallied up due to Green’s recklessness. Broadcasters, advertisers and ticketholders will also see their investments diminished in games that lack Green.

For the NBA, that’s a bigger problem than just one player’s suspension. Next year, the league opens negotiations over media rights deals that some analysts predict could be worth as much as $75 billion. Star players boost that value; suspended stars hurt it.
