In Florida, the politicians are racing to grasp the political football that was thrown into the air when the 12-1 University of Alabama Crimson Tide was selected to compete in the College Football Playoff instead of the undefeated Florida State Seminoles. Governor Ron DeSantis railed at the CFB selection committee. So did former President Donald Trump. And on Monday, Senator Rick Scott went so far as to draft a three-page letter demanding "total transparency" from the committee members, as well as their emails, text messages and other communications regarding the playoff selection.

Understanding what happened to FSU doesn’t require a congressional investigation. Instead, it requires paying attention to how the influx of billions of media rights dollars has fundamentally reshaped college football over the last 30 years. What had once been a sport built upon regional rivalries relished by students, alumni and a surrounding community now resembles a semi-professional league designed to inflate ratings for media rights holders and revenues for athletic departments. The CFB committee, faced with a choice between the most deserving team and the one that provides the more lucrative matchup, naturally chose the money.
