For college sports fans who believe in the idea of an amateur student-athlete — one motivated by the love of playing and scholarship — the game has taken a disappointing turn. News of players getting multi-million-dollar media deals and endorsements and unionizing has frustrated purists.

I’ve written about how a desire to return to amateurism is rooted in fantasy (which has also frustrated purists). But there is good news: That’s only the case at the Division I level. An overwhelming majority, around 320,000 athletes, play at the NCAA’s Division II and Division III levels.
