This week, University of Michigan star running back Blake Corum could have been finishing his first season in the National Football League. Instead, he will feature as one of the biggest stars in tonight’s College Football Playoff National Championship game between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the University of Washington Huskies. Among the deciding factors was his right to monetize the rights to his name, image and likeness, or NIL, for tens of thousands of dollars per month. Doing so, he recently told Sports Illustrated, “gives you the freedom to make the choice you want to make.”

That choice to play another season for the Wolverines didn’t just benefit Corum's pockets. This year’s CFP championship is one of the most anticipated ever, with the “get in” price for tickets hitting as high as $1,200 on secondary markets. College football fans worried that an influx of money might be destroying the sport should think again. When money ensures that the best, most experienced players are in the game, everyone— players, schools, media and fans — wins big time.
