Some 30 million people are expected to cross US airport security checkpoints over the course of the Thanksgiving travel week, making this one of the busiest stretches on record for the airline industry. And yet, shares of the major US carriers have plummeted about 30% from their July peak while those of low-cost airlines have fallen even further. As busy as the airlines might be during the peak of the holiday travel season, they’re not busy enough overall to fill all the available seats that continue to be aggressively added in the post-Covid period.
