Manufacturing construction spending in the US has surged to a record annualized pace — and that’s before factoring in all of the estimated $650 billion of megaprojects that have been announced since the beginning of 2021. “Businesses are investing more in manufacturing than ever before and are bringing the supply chains home,” President Joe Biden said in a speech last month on National Manufacturing Day. He has frequently compared the Ohio farmland that will eventually hold a $20 billion Intel Corp. chip complex to the “field of dreams.” But simply building factories doesn’t guarantee that the workers will come. Attracting and retaining a high-quality workforce has consistently ranked at the top of manufacturers’ biggest challenges, with hiring issues coming ahead of even the weaker economy in the National Association of Manufacturers’ third-quarter survey.
