There are many paths to conflict in the Western Pacific. In my last column, I outlined how China could precipitate a clash by getting tougher with Taiwan. When President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping meet in San Francisco later this month, that issue will surely be on the agenda.

But Taiwan is hardly the only place the peace could break down. Two other dangers have been highlighted by recent events: A face-off between China and the Philippines over an obscure South China Sea reef called Second Thomas Shoal, and a surge of risky Chinese military behavior meant to keep US forces far away.
