From May to October 2020, five public statues in Portland, Oregon, were either torn down by protesters/rioters/vandals or damaged so badly that city officials opted to remove them. The inanimate victims were George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt and his horse, Abraham Lincoln,1 19th century local newspaper editor Harvey Scott and a depiction of an Oregon pioneer family titled “The Promised Land.”

All the statues remain in storage at an undisclosed location, veteran journalist Richard Cheverton reported on his “Portland Dissent” Substack last month, with the city’s deliberations over what to do next taking years and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. As I read Cheverton’s humorously grumpy account, I initially nodded along in agreement with how ridiculous it all was.
