A soft landing may beckon for the US economy. Its clean technology sector could certainly use one too. Getting that won’t just require a more relaxed Federal Reserve, but efforts by its near neighbors on Pennsylvania Avenue and Capitol Hill.

The previous decade saw the energy transition make the leap from concept to commercial force. Tesla Inc. emerged as a leader in electric vehicles, solar and wind power capacity worldwide jumped sevenfold, and then a US presidential candidate ran on an openly green platform — and won. The essential backdrop to all this was cheap money: 10-year Treasury yields dropped from about 4.5% on the eve of the Great Recession to less than 2% on the eve of the pandemic, during which they dipped to 0.5%.
