Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping wrapped up a summit meeting last week with agreements on everything from military communications to artificial intelligence to pandas — a welcome sign of geopolitical stability after years of increasing tensions between the US and China.

Not on the list of agreements, however, was a deal to unwind the tariffs slapped on Chinese imports by Biden’s predecessor. Earlier in the week, in response to objections from congressional Democrats, the Biden administration had mothballed hopes for an Indo-Pacific trade deal that would have served as a successor to the Trans Pacific Partnership. Meanwhile, on the campaign trail, Donald Trump is calling for a 10% tariff on all imports regardless of origin.
