The UK economy may be growing again, if slowly. But as they head toward a general election, both of Britain’s main political parties are promising what amounts to a fiscal fantasy.

Both extol budgetary prudence. Yet they also promise to invest in health care, build houses, bolster the country’s threadbare defenses, decarbonize the economy and generate economic growth — all while reducing a tax burden that is now at a 70-year high.
