While year three of the war in Ukraine technically began yesterday, it was two other recent events that seemed most emblematic of a dismaying second anniversary. One was the fall on Feb. 17 of a city of just 32,000 people and a name that looks like a typographical error — Avdiivka — and the other was the death in an Arctic prison of Alexey Navalny, the last token political resister to Russian President Vladimir Putin. It took Russian forces about five months of fighting in earnest to dispatch the overmanned Ukrainians. It took Tsar Putin a bit longer — slightly over two years of detainment — to do the same to Navalny.
