Argentina’s national rugby sevens team made history once again by winning the 2023–24 World Rugby Sevens Series, better known as SVNS. It’s the Pumas first series win, where they’ve already won eight individual tournaments since 2004.

The Pumas — who arrived at the last league event as leaders with 94 points — fell to second-placed Ireland in the quarterfinals, but secured the top spot after beating South Africa 14-10 in the fifth-place game, coming back from 10-0 down. That result awarded them the 12 points necessary to secure the top spot.

“The journey was really difficult. We kept on trying, kept on pacticing, kept on believing in this team and I think we have the prize that we deserve. It’s incredible to be here at this moment,” said Argentina’s Gastón Revol, who debuted for his country back in 2009.

The Pumas had had an incredible start to the SVNS season. They won three straight tournaments in Cape Town, Perth, and Vancouver after losing the season-opener final in Dubai. However, the title looked like it was about to escape their hands after disappointing results in Los Angeles and particularly Hong Kong.

Head coach Santiago Gómez Cora was ecstatic about the win. “We put Argentina on top; we’re very proud because we led all season and this is a dream. When you work hard, dreams come true,” he told SVNS on-field reporter and former player Karl Te Nana.

Argentina will next take part in the brand new SVNS grand final in Madrid, from May 31 to June 2, where only the top eight teams will play, before competing for a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
