Dozens of flights have been delayed and some were canceled due to downpours in Buenos Aires, leaving Aeorparque (Jorge Newbery) and Ezeiza (Ministro Pistarini) airports with very few departures early Tuesday morning.

A thunderstorm hit Buenos Aires and intensified during the early hours of Tuesday. With streets heavily flooded, moving around the city and getting to the airports on time may be difficult.

At Jorge Newbery, the airport in Buenos Aires city, almost all departures scheduled from 6 to 10 a.m. were delayed or canceled, according to the website of airport operating company Aeropuertos Argentina 2000. Some arriving flights were also changed or canceled, with some diverted to other airports.

In Ministro Pistarini Airport, in Ezeiza, most flights were arriving on time at time of writing, but departures to national and international destinations scheduled from 6 a.m. onwards were delayed and some had still not taken off. The Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 site also shows some cancellations.

The rain was so heavy that a red alert, denoting extreme weather, was issued. The alert for Aeroparque was lifted at 10:30 a.m. but it remained in place for Ezeiza.

“Aeroparque and Ezeiza are in a very complicated situation because of a red [weather] alert,” a source from Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 told the Herald. The red alert doesn’t allow departing planes to load fuel, and arrivals don’t have luggage handling services because of a strict security protocol, the source added.

In both airports, some planes that were ready to take off remained on the runway waiting for the National Meteorological Service to lift the red alert.

The weather forecast indicates the thunderstorm will continue until Thursday.
