1 dead, 11 injured in mass shooting outside New Orleans nightclub

In response to the mass shooting outside Republic nightclub last night in New Orleans, Congressman Troy Carter (D-Louisiana), who represents my district, posted this on X, formerly Twitter:

In the spirit of being a recovering grouch, I diplomatically replied on X:

The representative and I draw different conclusions regarding who is to blame for criminals misusing guns.

I don't see where more restrictive regulations on gun owners who are not like this mass shooter will stop future outrages near or inside alcohol beverage outlets.

Furthermore, for years I've advocated for body armor worn by bar protection personnel, equipping them with less lethal tools like pepper gel sprayers and pepper ball projectors and yes, even firearms, with training.

For the record, none of these suggestions hinged upon law abiding gun owners facing new hurdles while unlawful ones faced none.

Barring those suggestions, I also support bouncers being supplemented by armed security officers from licensed security companies.

Having worked in a bar that used this hybrid approach, I know about its effectiveness

Violent career criminals are more than willing to misuse weapons they aren't supposed to have in the first place. They must be met by active shooter planning and armed responses, not disarming potential victims and private protectors.

My difference with the congressman on this ultimate urban safety issue reflects raging national debate between what I call an enabling ideology that feels gun ownership outside of police and the military threatens society and an empowering ideology which wants ballistic safety widely distributed throughout society to even odds during attempted homicide, sexual assault, armed robberies or active shootings.

I respectfully disagree with my congressman on who is responsible for what he calls "gun violence.

We do agree that it needs to be reduced.

I just don't think reducing the number of law abiding gun owners is the answer.
