A little-known rule could force you to pay more than you bargained for when holidaying in Spain. Annually, around 18million people head to the sunny tourist trap from the UK - and while it's not hard to understand why, with all the stunning weather and cheap drinks, it isn't without its drawbacks.

One particular hurdle pertains to Benidorm - a seaside destination on the east coast of the country, which attracts more than a million Brits every year. As with all coastal destinations, Benidorm has specific rules designed to keep order - and one of them relates to when you can go swimming.

Those caught swimming in the sea between midnight and 7am are at risk of a fine between €750 and €1,200 (£641 to £1,026) - and the same penalty applies to those caught sleeping or camping on beaches during these hours.

The Mirror reports that these aren't the only rules either. Below is a list of some of the actions that could land you with a far lighter wallet in Benidorm.

Tourism and hospitality are a massive part of the Spanish economy, but keeping control of the industry is easier said than done. At the moment, a debate is raging across the European hotspot as to whether late opening restaurants and bars should shut earlier.

Yolanda Diaz, Spain's Minister of Employment and Social Economy, detailed how new regulations will be introduced to adjust opening times that are currently 'not reasonable'. If said ambitions come to fruition, then squares filled with cheerful punters slurping sangria into the early hours may soon become a thing of the past.

Diaz, argued: "A country that has its restaurants open at one in the morning is not reasonable. It is crazy to try to continue extending hours until I don't know what time."

However, not everyone is a fan of the proposals. Jose Luis Yzuel, who is the president of Hospitality of Spain, said that the changes would risk Spain becoming 'more boring than the Nordic countries, where you go home at 6pm because nothing is open'.
