The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has identified Mycoplasma pneumoniae, the bacteria linked with the recent increase in respiratory illness in Chinese children.

According to a Lancet Microbe Journal report, AIIMS Delhi detected this bacterium that causes 'walking pneumonia' in seven samples collected between April and September 2023.

According to the American Lung Association, the symptoms include cough, fever, chest pain, mild chills and headache.

Following the outbreak in China, five states, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu had heightened readiness. The Center also urged the states to asses of public health infrastructure.

Considering the surge in respiratory illness in China, WHO has released a general advisory for people. I request the public to follow the instructions, know the Dos and Don’ts and take measures to prevent influenza.
