The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) will be leading a nationwide day of action on Saturday, May 11, with a demonstration set to take place at the main gate of RAF Lakenheath in west Suffolk.

It follows growing fears from the group that nuclear weapons will be stationed at the airbase, the largest US-operated base in England.

A legal challenge was launched by the group last year, while they also gathered outside the Suffolk airbase with the aim of carrying out a search.

CND Chair Tom Unterrainer said: “CND stands firmly opposed to this dangerous and destabilising development. Persistent local and national campaigning got US nuclear weapons removed from Lakenheath before."

Previously, an RAF Lakenheath spokesman said: "We recognize and support the right to peaceful protest as a fundamental aspect of a democratic society, however it’s a long standing Ministry of Defence policy that we do not discuss the location or status of nuclear weapons."

Last August, a MoD spokesperson said: "It remains a long-standing UK and NATO policy to neither confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons at a given location."
