Last year, Great Yarmouth Borough Council told Glenn Parrott that his plans for the roof of his house on Station Road South in Belton were "jarring and uncomfortable".

He wanted to remove the roof, replace it with a higher pitch and raise the eaves to form accommodation in the roof space.

But Mr Parrott took the fight to the Planning Inspectorate, a government agency which can overturn decisions where it thinks councils have gone against planning law.

Now inspectors have sided with the homeowner and permitted the roof extension.

In a decision made last month, inspector Terrence Kemmann-Lane said the proposed roof would "just be another variation on the variety that exists in the area".

The increased height of the first floor and roof would not have a harmful effect on the character of the existing dwelling, or on the street scene, he said.

He also said there would be no harmful effect from the proposal on the living conditions of the neighbouring house.
