Good Sports, inside the former McColl's shop under Market Gates Shopping Centre, opens on Saturday, and will provide people with sports kits, information on sports and leisure meetups, and pathways to better jobs.

The new shop is a joint enterprise between the club and community project Football Against Dementia.

(Image: James Weeds)Still beaming from the Bloater's Thurlow Nunn Division One league title win, president Jack Jay said the shop's opening "marked the beginning of a new era" for the club as it aims to improve the lives of people in the town.

"This is one of the big reasons why I decided to get involved with the club," he said. "The work it does in the wider community is amazing.

"And that's what football - and sports in general - should all be about.

"Our efforts continue to grow and we want to be a central figure in the town to help people get into sport, healthier living and employment."

(Image: James Weeds)As well as offering sports equipment, clothes and books, Good Sports also houses Football Against Dementia and its various projects, including the Take A Chance On Me employment scheme, Get Your Nordic Walk-In and the Christmas Stocking Campaign.

The new shop also has a meeting room for businesses to speak with jobseekers to establish pathways into work.

Director Trevor Saunders said the one-stop shop aims to provide a holistic approach to improving lives.

"With affordable - and even free - equipment, we want people to become more active in their lives. Access to a better life shouldn't be restricted to just those who can afford it."
