New city resident wants to help on committees

To the Editor:

My name is Rev. Dr. Phillip Fleming. I’m a New York State-certified Peer Specialist (provisional) and Certified Recovery Peer Advocate living in Geneva’s Ward 1, just south of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Since moving to Geneva from New York City eight months ago, I starting working as an election inspector for the Ontario County Board of Elections.

I was hoping to serve on the Disability Awareness Committee and the Human Rights Commission at some point in the near future but was told earlier this year by a current city council member from Ward 5 by email that such institutions have been disbanded, no longer in existence. This greatly concerns me because I feel that the city’s boards, committees, and commissions can be ways in which residents can be actively involved in the life and activities of Geneva, outside of holding elected and appointed government office.

As a new registered voter in Geneva, I want to help elect leadership that values resident input, feedback, and ideas. One way I believe this can be achieved is to have active community advisory boards that not only act as a check and balance mechanism for city government but also welcome and embrace community involvement and strengthening the vitality and quality of life of city residents. Having adequate and sustainable socioeconomic and community resources for all residents. Not spending too many resources on tourism and neglecting city residents, especially those residents who are struggling to make ends meet and those without a roof over their head and resources to live.

If there are ways I can be of service, feel free to let me know.

Thank you,

PHILLIP FLEMING
