Our lakefront does not need commercial development — no marina

To the Editor:

Ken Camera and Jackie Augustine have raised legitimate questions about whether the “development” of the lakefront into a marina, which would presumably be close to, if not directly in front of, the Welcome Center, would be a good idea. Most of the argument seems to center around money, including whether grants might be lost, if the marina construction does not go forward.

Having lived on Seneca Lake my entire life, with a few breaks, I think there are lots of people who would agree with me that there is something more important than money to consider in this analysis.

As of now, the area around the Welcome Center and east along the lakeshore, is wide open, clean and beautiful. Residents of the city and many others walk the area of the Welcome Center and into the state park on a daily basis to get views of the wide open green spaces of the park, migratory birds, eagles and osprey and other wildlife, along with the view of Seneca Lake south. The best views can be had while sipping a glass of delicious Finger Lakes wine or beer or cider on the porch of the Welcome Center.

Anyone who has grown up in the Finger Lakes and is old enough can remember when the north end of Canandaigua Lake, with Roseland Park, had similarly unobstructed views of that lake looking south. It is now mostly blocked by residential and commercial development.

We have something here on the north end of Seneca Lake that should not be surrendered on the unsubstantiated speculation that more tax dollars MIGHT be obtained. Hopefully, residents of the city and the area will contact City Council members to vote AGAINST further development of the lakeshore, including especially a marina. Once construction starts, we will lose this unmatchable beauty forever.
