READ Act helps cure lack of education among children globally
To the Editor:
Most of you reading this can remember your early days in the education system. Feel the picture book, chapter book, and cartoons in your hands or tablet. Most of you can remember attending class, being with your friends, listening in class day in and out. However, not all children have a similar experience, and while it may seem standard for children to get an education, that could be further from the truth.
At the moment, “58 million primary school-aged children globally do not attend school, and 260 million do not have access to quality education.” In addition, this disproportionately affects young girls and adult women worldwide, continuing into adulthood. Today, “women make up more than two-thirds of the world’s 796 million illiterate people.”
So what is being done for the children? Has any impact been made? In 2017, the Reinforcing Education Accountability in Development (READ) Act was signed into law. The READ Act works to improve the quality of education for children worldwide, especially young girls. However, the READ Act Reauthorization Act reauthorizes the READ Act for an additional five years. The time is coming to a close, and I urge you all to email Congress to support the READ Act Reauthorization Act!
