The two unspoken operating premises of Ones and Tooze, the podcast I co-host with FP columnist Adam Tooze, are, first, that economics permeates everything non-economic—and also that economics can itself only be fully understood through a non-economic lens. This affords us tremendous freedom in selecting topics to address every week. Over 2023, we covered everything from the globalized business of sneakers to the wartime economics of Israel and Gaza. Here’s a look at some of our best work from 2023.

In recent years, citizens in the United States and Europe have gotten used to hearing about government programs at the level of hundreds of billions of dollars. But trillions of dollars still represents a psychological barrier that governments seem reluctant to breach—even as political events call for just that. It’s a political constraint that may ultimately have a psychological foundation. In this episode, Adam and I discussed how the taboo might be overcome.

On the occasion of the national U.S. holiday dedicated to the life of Martin Luther King Jr., Adam and I approach his legacy from an unorthodox angle. King is, of course, remembered as a pioneering civil rights activist. But in his later years, he also became increasingly outspoken about economic policy and economic justice. In this episode, Adam and I discussed how King’s economic views were ultimately inseparable from his civil rights philosophy.

The Open Society Foundations, the philanthropic organization founded by billionaire investor George Soros, announced earlier this year that it was changing the composition of the more than $1 billion in grants it distributes every year. The organization has indicated that Europe will no longer be a focus of its funding, and observers have been busy trying to understand what its priorities will be instead. In this episode, Adam and I considered what this shift might mean for the legacy of Soros himself—as a thinker about financial markets and as a liberal activist.

U.S. President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign has placed “Bidenomics” at the center of its economic platform. It refers to an economic philosophy that has guided Biden’s policies in office—including increased public investment in infrastructure, high-tech manufacturing, and renewable energy—and which marks a shift from previous Democratic administrations. In this episode, Adam and I examined whether Bidenomics is really a coherent philosophy after all—or whether it’s really just a political label slapped onto a grab bag of policies.

Shortly after the Hamas-organized attack on Israel and the subsequent war launched by Israel, Adam and I recorded this podcast. At that time, it was already clear that the war would be a historical tragedy, although the extent of the humanitarian crisis was not yet clear. In this episode, however, we took a step back to examine the ways that economics—from the “de-development” that Israel had previously imposed on Gaza to Hamas’s methods for financing itself—informed the run-up to this explosion of violence.
