For last some time Greater Kashmir is promoting “Nasha Mukt J&K” campaign and this is one of the commendable steps towards addressing the alarming rise in drug addiction within the Union Territory.

The campaign signifies a proactive effort to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of substance abuse and to mobilize community support for combating this pressing issue.

Through its extensive reach and influence, Greater Kashmir is indeed playing a pivotal role in amplifying the campaign’s message and engaging diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organisations, educational institutions, religious leaders, and local communities.

Pertinently the past year has seen a concerning surge in drug addiction cases across Jammu and Kashmir, with a staggering number of individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse. According to data compiled by the J&K government, a total of 11,476 patients sought assistance from various drug de-addiction centers in 2023, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Health officials and residents alike are alarmed by the increasing number of individuals, particularly youth, falling prey to drug addiction. Experts attribute this trend to several factors, including the easy availability of drugs, lack of awareness, peer pressure, and levels of unemployment inJ&K.

The Centre has provided startling statistics, estimating that over 14.09 lakh people, aged between 10 and 75, are using various psychoactive substances in Jammu and Kashmir. This includes a wide spectrum of substances, with opioids, alcohol, cannabis, and inhalants being the most commonly abused.

Of particular concern is the dominance of opium and its derivatives in over 90 percent of substance abuse cases. Researchers from the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS), Kashmir, have conducted studies highlighting the changing patterns of opioid use in the region. Their findings indicate a significant dependency on contraband substances, primarily opium and its derivatives, among adults in Kashmir.

The complex factors contributing to the drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir include unemployment, the lingering impact of conflict, peer pressure, unfulfilled aspirations, parental expectations, poverty, and corruption. Additionally, prevalent drugs of abuse in the J&K include tobacco, cannabis, alcohol, benzodiazepines, opiates, brown sugar, and various inhalants.

The situation has escalated further with a sharp rise in the consumption of hard drugs such as heroin and other opioids. A survey conducted in the southern J&K of Kashmir revealed a disturbing lack of awareness among respondents regarding drug abuse and its consequences.

In light of these developments, urgent measures are needed to address the root causes of drug addiction in Jammu and Kashmir. This includes comprehensive awareness campaigns, employment generation programs, enhanced law enforcement to curb drug trafficking, and increased access to treatment and rehabilitation facilities for those affected by substance abuse. Only through concerted efforts can the J&K hope to combat the growing menace of drug addiction and protect the well-being of its residents.

Kashmir, has unfortunately been grappling with the menace of drug abuse in recent years. The proliferation of narcotics and psychotropic substances has not only posed a serious threat to public health but has also undermined social cohesion and economic development in the region. In this article, we delve into the challenges of substance abuse in Kashmir and propose strategies for achieving a “Nasha Mukt Kashmir”

The problem of drug abuse in Kashmir is multifaceted, with various factors contributing to its prevalence. Socioeconomic disparities, unemployment, political instability, and conflict-related trauma have created fertile ground for the spread of substance abuse. Additionally, easy access to illicit drugs, lack of awareness about the dangers of addiction, and inadequate rehabilitation facilities exacerbate the problem.

The consequences of drug abuse extend beyond individual users, impacting families, communities, and society at large. Substance abuse leads to a range of health issues, including addiction, mental health disorders, and increased risk of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, drug-related crime, violence, and the breakdown of social norms contribute to a sense of insecurity and disintegration of social fabric.

Addressing the scourge of drug abuse in Kashmir requires a comprehensive approach that combines prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts.

Implementing targeted educational programs to raise awareness about the risks associated with drug abuse and promoting healthy lifestyles among youth.

Strengthening Law Enforcement: Enhancing efforts to curb drug trafficking and illicit production through robust law enforcement measures and collaboration with neighbouring states.

Expanding access to affordable and quality treatment facilities, including detoxification centers, counselling services, and long-term rehabilitation programs.

Mobilising community resources and fostering partnerships between government agencies, civil society organisations, religious institutions, and local communities to address the root causes of substance abuse and provide support to affected individuals and families.

Creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment initiatives to address underlying socioeconomic factors contributing to drug abuse.

Engaging youth in constructive activities such as sports, arts, and vocational training to prevent them from falling prey to substance abuse and providing positive role models and mentors.

Achieving a “Nasha Mukt Kashmir” requires concerted efforts from all segments of society, including government agencies, civil society organisations, religious leaders, educators, and community members. By implementing evidence-based strategies for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, Kashmir can overcome the scourge of drug abuse and pave the way for a healthier, safer, and more prosperous future for its residents. Let us work together to build a resilient and drug-free Kashmir where individuals can fulfil their potential and contribute positively to society.
