In January 1893, Baron Friedrich von Leitenberger asked Theodor Herzl to write an article against antisemitism for the Society to Combat Anti-Semitism, which had been formed in Vienna by a group of liberal Austrian gentiles. The baron was its honorary president. Herzl turned him down, saying that antisemitism cannot be defeated with words, it must be dealt with by radical and concrete action. From that time on, he embarked on a tireless search for those concrete means, which led him, about three years later, to write the essay "The Jewish State."
