In May 1983, about a year after the first Lebanon war broke out, and after around 500 soldiers had been killed in it, a group of Israelis formed Parents Against Silence. Representatives from the movement met with then-Defense Minister Moshe Arens, who made it clear to them that he was adamantly opposed to the withdrawal of the army from Lebanon.
