MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Former Texas front office executive Jack Easterby is working with the Texas A&M men’s basketball program, though school officials say it is in an unofficial capacity.

“I’ve known Coach Jack for long before he was with the Texans, long before I was at Texas A&M,” Williams said. “Over a decade. He’s just here at the game.”

The No. 9-seeded Aggies beat Nebraska Friday night and faced top-seeded Houston Sunday night, with the winner advancing to next weekend’s South Regional in Dallas.

According to Aggies players, Easterby is doing more than just watching the games. Texas A&M junior guard Jace Carter indicates that he has a more involved role with the team for the past three weeks.

“He came around when we played in Athens (Ga. on March 2),” Carter said. “That was my first time meeting him.

“He leads our chapel. He’s led our chapel ever since. This is a good dude. Prays really hard for us.”

Wade Taylor IV, A&M’s leading scorer, says the Aggies have chapel every morning.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Easterby has been a self-employed consultant since he was fired by the Texans in October of 2022.

Easterby’s controversial tenure with the Texans began in 2019 with the listed title of executive vice president of team development. Less than a year later, he was promoted to vice president of football operations, where he was involved in personnel decisions as the team fell apart toward the end of the Bill O’Brien era.

When O‘Brien was let go in October of 2020, Easterby became the Texans’ interim general manager.

Easterby had served as a character coach for the University of South Carlina for six years, before getting his first NFL position as the team chaplain of the Kansas City Chiefs, where he worked for two years. He was with the Patriots as a character coach and team chaplain for six seasons before O’Brien brought him to the Texans.
