Houston TV anchors and reporters were on the move in 2023. That keeps things interesting for those of us watching the news. Here are some of those goodbyes, and hellos.

Chauncy Glover surprised viewers when he announced he was departing ABC 13, where he was an anchor for more than eight years. He later shared on social media that had relocated to Los Angeles to be the evening co-anchor at the CBS station. Glover also said he would continue his Chauncy Glover Project, an empowerment program for Black and Latino boys in Houston.

After two years at Fox 26, meteorologist Lena Arango quit the station to take a job at Alliantgroup Consulting. She had been forecasting in English and Spanish and took a break early last summer after injuring her back.

Houston native Syan Rhodes shared that she was leaving her anchor job after revealing that she had become a foster mom. Born and raised in Sunnyside and Third Ward, she is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. She now is press secretary for Harris County Precinct 4.

In February, ABC 13 reporter Shelley Childers and her husband celebrated the birth of their third child, a baby girl named Arden. By July, she called it quits after over five years at the station. By, October, she had returned to her old job at ABC 13.

Brandon Walker, a New Orleans native, left his anchor job at KPRC 2 in February. He had been at the station since 2015. He is now back home as an anchor in New Orleans. In 2020, Walker was hit by a truck as he walked on a crosswalk. He suffered broken ribs and a fractured face. Walker later thanked Lamar High School senior Alex Park for helping save his life.


Jonathan Martin, who was known for his dance moves off-air, quit his anchor job at Fox 26 after seven years. While in Houston, the Atlanta native partnered with the Houston Parks and Recreation department to create SWEAT TX, a fitness program for kids. He also won Urban Souls Dance Company’s Dancing with the Houston Stars competition in 2018. Martin is now an anchor in Atlanta.

Jonathan Martin

After five years as co-host of KPRC’s Houston Life, Courtney Zavala announced her departure on-air with co-host Derrick Shore. She first joined the station in 2003 as a reporter, after stints in Utah and Midland-Odesssa.

KHOU 11 anchor Lauren Talarico left in January to move to be closer to her extended family in New York. She joined the station in 2015 after graduating from the University of Tennessee.

KPRC 2 traffic anchor Anavid Reyes took to Facebook to say that she needed "time to focus on family" and announced she was leaving in April. She had been in the job for nearly three years and previously worked in Austin.

After returning to Fox 26 in January from medical leave, Jose Griñan announced he was retiring in May after 30 years with the station. He retired with a lavish party at Million Air Houston. A native of Tampa, Griñan's father was a native Cuban and his mother was a first-generation Cuban American.

Radio personality Tessa Barrera, one of the morning hosts of “The Rod Ryan Show” on 94.5 The Buzz, joined KPRC's "Houston Life" as a permanent co-host. She filled the spot of Courtney Zavala, who left in January. Barrera told fans she wasn’t leaving the Rod Ryan radio show. After her morning radio show, she said she would join co-host Derrick Shore for “Houston Life.”

Jonathan Bruce, who joined ABC 13 as a digital anchor in Dec. 2021, was promoted to the weekday evening anchor spot vacated by Chauncy Glover. Bruce joined co-host Mayra Moreno. A native of Jackson, Miss., Bruce was a long-time sports talk host for an ESPN Radio affiliate. In 2016, he and his brother, Henry, founded their own media and film company, Bash Brothers Media. He’s also an avid golfer and singer.

Kim Castro, the weekend morning meteorologist for KHOU 11, shared that she was moving to weekday evenings. She joined the station in 2021 after working in California and Oregon. She is half Ecuadorian and half German and fluent in Spanish.

ABC 13 weekend anchor Erica Simon announced in May that she was moving from weekends to the weekday evening news. The Dallas native later revealed that she and her husband were expecting their second child.
