Welcome to the Inc.'s Founders Project With Alexa Von Tobel podcast -- where we bring you stories of the entrepreneurs building the future. Listen to the tales of guts, inspiration, and drive that define the people and companies at the forefront of technology. Each week, we dig into a founder's professional playbook and uncover what makes them tick. And for this week's episode:

John Colgrove considers himself an engineer rather than an entrepreneur, but despite that, he is the founder and chief visionary officer of Pure Storage. The company simplifies data storage -- and has a market cap of over $11 billion. Colgrove co-founded Pure Storage in 2009 to enable every organization to get the most from their data and has grown the business to over 11,000 enterprise customers. Before launching Pure, he spent 20 years at Veritas Software and holds over 170 patents in computer system design. Colgrove shares why he hired engineers outside of the storage industry, how to maintain a 10x mentality as you scale, and why hard drives will be a thing of the past.
